SMED - Single Minute Exchange of Die

  • A buzz word which means reducing your changeover times from one product to another.
  • You break down the changeover of a machine to understand how much of the change over can be completed whilst running a previous job and how much has to be completed when the machine is idle. By analysing this you can see what improvements can be made.
  • We look for efficiency savings to maximise your machine availability
  • Typically 30% changeover reductions are seen therefore increasing you capacity or less overtime.
  • Recently we reduced a change over by one hour, this improvement could be transfered to every change over equalling 400 hours per month saved. Other than my cost the improvement cost £0.
  • We can measure machine effectiveness prior to ensure we prioritise the reduction exercise.
